Challenge

The property located in Romsey, VIC was plagued by problems stemming from leaves, debris, and other materials that frequently clogged its gutters. This not only caused water overflow but also increased the risk of damage to the surrounding areas. In such persistent issues, the intended solution would prevent the gutters from clogging while ensuring seamless integration with the property’s aesthetics.

Upon consultation with Aussie Gutter Protection, we selected TuffMesh™ Ember Guard as the best-fit solution. Considering the fine debris surrounding the property, the 1.6 mm hole aperture of the TuffMesh™ Ember Guard would be a more suitable choice over the 3.5 mm hole size of the TuffMesh™ Aluminium product. This choice ensured that even the finest debris would be prevented from entering the gutters, providing an optimal solution tailored to the property’s unique challenges.

Solution

ScreenTech, renowned for its top-tier products and dedicated support to tradespeople, builders, and architects, suggested the use of TuffMesh™ Ember Guard. This product was recommended not just for its durability but also for its longevity as a gutter guard solution.

The Woodland Grey® mesh matched the property’s roof, and the same colour was selected for the trim to complement the guttering. As it was a tile installation, no other fittings and fixtures were required. This ensured a seamless and stylish finish that was aesthetically pleasing and functional. With the diligent work of Aussie Gutter Protection’s technicians, 92 metres of TuffMesh™ Ember Guard was carefully installed, guaranteeing a secure fit.

As a result, the TuffMesh™ material now allows water to flow unhindered into the gutters, effectively preventing leaves, debris, and other materials from causing blockages. With this installation, the property now boasts a beautifully fitted TuffMesh™ Ember Guard system, which protects the gutters and ensures water flows freely, significantly reducing any potential damage risks.

Challenge

The residence located in Townsville, QLD, was facing specific issues with Indian Mynas and Pigeons. These birds are known to cause several problems:

  1. Nesting: Indian Mynas and Pigeons tend to accumulate and nest around solar panels and in gutters. This nesting behavior not only causes potential damage to the solar panels, reducing their efficiency, but also leads to blockages in the gutters.

  2. Disease: Both Indian Mynas and Pigeons are known to carry diseases, and their droppings can be a health hazard for the residents.

  3. Noise and Aggression: Indian Mynas are particularly noisy birds and can be very aggressive, causing distress to residents and native wildlife.

Moreover, the standard gutter was getting clogged with leaves and debris, leading to water overflow and associated damage.

Protecting only the solar panels would likely cause the birds to migrate to the gutters or roof spaces, as they don’t often leave a nesting site area once established. Therefore, there was a need for a comprehensive solution that addresses both the solar panels and the gutters.

Need commercial gutter guard installed?

Solution

ScreenTech recommended the installation of GutterMesh along with the Solar Mesh Standard Kit. The GutterMesh would prevent leaves and debris from clogging the gutters and deter the Indian Mynas and Pigeons from nesting there, while the Solar Mesh Standard Kit would protect the solar panels from birds and vermin while allowing sunlight to reach the panels.

  • TuffMesh® Emberguard meeting BAL-29 bushfire attack levels.

Challenge

Construction on the 500-bed ‘Centre for National Resilience’ facility in Bullsbrook began in October 2021, with the new completion date set for June 2022.

Located in Bullsbrook, an area with a BAL-29 rating. The site is located around native eucalyptus trees that can cause blockages during the storm season.

The low pitch spandek roofs and large box gutters can block with leaves from overhanging gum trees, which has caused water to back up and inundate the buildings causing major damage to the facility.

Due to the nature of the facility, maintenance minimisation was a crucial consideration for the project also minimising the risk of falls at heights from staff.

Need commercial gutter guard installed?

Solution

ScreenTech recommended the GutterMesh Emberguard with a 1.9mm hole size to meet the facility’s ember guard solution for buildings throughout the centre.

The gutter guard would significantly reduce both the maintenance upkeep of constantly cleaning gutters, reduced WH&S risk to the centre, and significantly reduce the risk of ember attack and over-flow flooding in these buildings.

ScreenTech also ensured a complete colour-match with Colorbond Monument® and supplied colour-matched Super-dek clip for the span-dek roof profile.

Gutter guard solution

  • TuffMesh® Aluminium  mesh  with AS 4020 drinking standards

Challenge

ScreenTech partnered with South East Water & Villawood Properties as the preferred supplier of a gutter guard solution for the AquaRevo project in Lyndhurst, southeast Melbourne. The AquaRevo project aims to create and model a sustainable residential development with unprecedented water efficiency combating climate change and drought.

All 460 homes in the development have a Rain-to-Water System that screens, filters and treats the rainwater for use in the home for non-drinking purposes for outdoor and indoor use. Water use includes toilets, washing machines, laundry, showers and bathing and dishwashers.

The first component of the Rain-to-Water System includes a gutter guard that filters water collected in the gutter and drainpipes from the leaves and debris. The gutter guard needed to meet Australian AS 4020 Drinking Water Standards for water use in the homes.

Other considerations for the project included architectural styles such as; the roofing aesthetics and Colorbond colours. Roof shapes with hips and gable roof forms, coastal skillion roof styles were popular choices for architects and higher pitch degrees were common features to maximise the catchment of rainwater.

Gutter profiles included standard gutter profiles and box gutters especially to maximise water catchment area.

The properties ranged from a mix of single and double-storey housing. Each house on the estate had architectural differences so all the properties had to be quoted after architect and homeowner approval. The last consideration was the timeframe, for example, the properties were built on multiple sites across multiple stages. The gutter guard needed to be fitted during the build, so our commercial estimators quoted from each homes plans.

Solution

The first component of the Rain to Hot Water System needed to filter rainwater from the gutters, downpipes and rain heads leading into the tank water.

The gutter guard must meet AS/NZS 4020 designed to test any products in contact with drinking water. The standard ensures that drinking water in contact with such products meets nationally recommended water quality values.

ScreenTech’s TuffMesh Alumuminium is tested and certified specific to the requirements of a gutter guard product:

Taste of water: Does the gutter guard release any compounds that impart discernible taste?

The appearance of water: Does the gutter guard change the colour or turbidity of the water it filters?

Growth of aquatic micro-organisms support: Does the water’s dissolved oxygen levels over 8 weeks support bacterial growth?

Cytotoxic activity of water extract: Does the water filtered by the gutter guard have any adverse effect on cell health? (water extract is placed in contact with mammalian cell lines)

Mutagenic activity: Does a  AMES test show any changes to the bacteria’s genetic nature (or mutagenic activity evidence)?

Metal traces: Are there any traces of arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, selenium and silver within Australian standard limits?

Our TuffMesh Aluminium gutter guard products are  AS/NZS 4020 tested and certified.

Gutter guard solution

  • TuffMesh® Emberguard mesh with a hole size of 1.9 mm

Challenge

screentech commercial gutter guard project

Yarra Ranges Special Development School is located in Mount Evelyn, Victoria, in a BAL-29 rated area of the state. The site is at risk of ember attack during the Summer months. The location is also prone to heavy downpours in winter and spring. The low pitch roofs and oversized box gutters are prone to blockages from leaves from overhanging gum trees and finner debris from native wattle trees, which has caused water build up in their guttering systems and contamination in their tank water.

As a school, the oversized box gutters were also exposed to blockages from play equipment – including balls and other sporting equipment. This meant maintenance staff were consistently getting on the roof to collect play and sports equipment lodged in the box gutters or downpipes. The maintenance team wanted a solution to minimize constant gutter cleaning and maintenance. A gutter guard would also reduce members of the facilities maintenance team from climbing on the roofs and cleaning out getters once a fortnight – reducing the risk of falls.

The project also had a short timescale to completion due to the school’s budget requirements needing the project complete before the end of the fiscal year.

Solution

yarra ranges special school Tuffmesh ember case study

Our TuffMesh Emberguard has a 1.6mm aperture size that complies with the area’s BAL-20 ratings and was installed on numerous buildings throughout the campus. The school is located in a rural bushfire area and needed an Ember guard solution to meet AS 3959/1999 BAL29 rating for ember guard. We achieved a colour match with the gutters and roof, having several colour variations between the newly refurbished areas of the school and the older campus.

TuffMesh Emberguard is an unrivalled product in Australia with a 1.6mm aperture hole to ensure bushfire protection against the smallest embers. We also swaged the mesh to ensure optimal water flow and catchment as the school wanted to improve their tank water quality.

Our installation partner Aussie Gutter Protection (AGP), installed the gutter protection system within the required time frame. ScreenTech’s commercial installation manager worked closely with AGP and the school’s onsite maintenance manager to advise on bracing and installation techniques for the box gutters and roof-to-roof fixtures.
